This is the theme of the campus-wide, MSU Fall Welcome Fill the Bus event that exemplifies what it means to be part of the Spartan family.
From Sunday, Aug. 25, thru Wednesday, Aug. 28, donations of school supplies, health and hygiene items, non-perishable food and cash will be accepted for those in need throughout the greater Lansing area. These items will be “filling the bus” that will be located in the commuter lot on the corner of Mount Hope and Farm Lane.
The Fill the Bus event has been helping local K-12 students since 2009. With school resuming in the coming weeks, donations of extra school supplies are especially needed, such as highlighters, markers, pencils, pens, spiral notebooks, pads of paper and hand sanitizer.
The College of Communication Arts & Sciences encourages all its students, faculty, staff and alumni to come together to do their part.
Main entrances of the CAS building will have lime green bins where items can be dropped off. Cash donations will be accepted in the CAS Undergraduate Student Affairs Office, room 189. Stratton Lee, CAS undergraduate adviser, is coordinating Fill the Bus for the college so if you have questions, please contact him.
The MSU Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE) is coordinating and co-facilitating this year’s event. CSLCE Program Coordinator Nathaniel Cradit explained the deep-rooted connection between being a Spartan and giving back.
“It’s a key part of what it means to be a Spartan, and a first glimpse at living into our land-grant heritage at MSU,” Cradit said. “It’s about the notion that small donations make big impacts. The extra notebook, folder, pack of markers, or other items that you give, combined with those of thousands of MSU students and staff, help make the beginning of the school year brighter for local children and their families.”
Volunteers also are needed to assist in sorting and distributing donations on Thursday, Aug. 29. If you are interested in volunteering, send an email to Cradit at email@example.com.
