Amy Akers

Recipient: Amy Akers

Amy is a first year Master's student in the Telecommunications Department studying social media and society. She works at WLNS as the Digital Content Supervisor and has helped build two mobile applications for the station, as well as develop their award winning website. Amy has a passion for digitally connecting the world through social media and news and believes a well informed generation will yield more powerful leaders in the years to come.

Rebecca Gray

Recipient: Rebecca Gray

Rebecca is a doctoral student in the Media and Information Studies Ph.D. program. She currently performs research on the role of social network sites in ad-hoc collaboration as well as the the impact of norm violations in computer-mediated communication in both organizational settings and interpersonal relationships.

Kendall Koning

Recipient: Kendall Koning

Kendall is pursuing a Ph.D. in the department of Telecommunications, Information Studies and Media as well as J.D. at the Michigan State University College of Law. Before grad school, he spent several years as a high-level internetworking engineer and as the owner of a small web-development firm. His interests include the economics and regulation of information and communications technology industries as well as computer-assisted collaborative knowledge creation. His current research involves evolutionary game theory and the creation of intelligent artificial agents in complex adaptive systems economics models.

Carolyn Lauckner

Recipient: Carolyn Lauckner

Carolyn is a third year PhD student in the Media and Information Studies program. She's interested in the effects of technology in healthcare, including how it can help people to lead healthier lives as well as the potential negative consequences of its use. Currently, she's working on projects that use videoconferencing to connect patients with doctors that they would not have access to otherwise. She hopes to continue doing work in this area that will help patients and patients' loved ones in the years to come.

Wenjuan Ma

Recipient: Wenjuan Ma

Wenjuan Ma is doctoral student in the Department of Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies & Media at Michigan State University, USA. Her passion is in media economics, policy and quantitative analysis methods. Her present works build upon this passion and foundation she laid in since she was an undergraduate student.

She performs research on broadband adoption and penetration and will continue research on this topic. Additionally, Wenjuan's is interested in online advertising media impact offline media and the entire industry and how search engine use pricing and ranking policy to keep advertisers gaming with the system.

Hsin-yi Sandy Tsai

Recipient: Hsin-yi Sandy Tsai

Sandy is a doctoral student and a teaching assistant in TISM. She is the current student representative of the Media & Information Studies (MIS) PhD program. She studied telecommunications and journalism in Taiwan before she came to MSU. She is interested in communications and technologies, especially communication policies, media selection, public media, civic engagement, and the social and psychological implications of media use.

Liang is a first year international graduate student on the HCI track with a focus on serious game design. Being a game designer in the industry has always been his goal, and he's particularly interested in both psychological and technological theories related to game design. He loves what he does, and he always hopes to share this passion with more people.

Linlin Liang

Recipient: Linlin Liang

Linlin is a first year graduate student studying Media and Information Management and very interested in Information, Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D). Motivated from her experience in India and China, she plans to continue exploring the applications and implications of ICTs in developing countries. Also, she has great passion about non-profit work and NGOs for all kinds of marginalized communities.

Justin Tokarski

Justin is a first year MA student focusing on serious game design and research. He plans to use his background in philosophy and psychology to provide a unique perspective on the relationship between players and avatars. When not studying games, playing games, or reviewing games, he performs slam poetry, practices capoeira, plays piano, and spends time with his fiance.

Jan Hendrik-Boehmer

Recipient: Jan Hendrik-Boehmer

Jan is a Ph.D. student in Media and Information Studies, who is fascinated by the ability of new technologies to influence perceptions of content. His research focusses on how media organizations can employ social media to develop closer relationships with their audiences, and how those relationships affect the audiences' behavior. Jan has worked as a reporter, editor and social media consultant for radio, TV and online media and remains close to the industry as he looks to provide practical guidance in addition to advancing the theoretical understanding of newer media.

Recipient: Michael Budram

Michael is a graduate student in the Serious Game Design track. His interests are primarily in the user experience, particularly with respect to creating memories that stay with a user long after playing a game. Because of his technical background, he also has an interest in studying and developing technological design patterns that support new user experience designs.

Lauren is a junior studying Media and Information, and Advertising, with a concentration in Media Management. Since being at MSU, Lauren has worked in the advertising department of The State News and as a research assistant in the TISM department. In the future, she hopes to work at an advertising agency in Detroit or Chicago.

Samantha Kruse

Samantha is a Media and Information Senior who will graduate Spring 2014. She currently edits for MSU Telecasters and is pursuing a videography internship for next year. After graduation, she plans on moving to Los Angeles and applying for a Masters in Cinematic Arts at UCLA and staying out there to work in the industry.

Qinrui is a junior studying Media and Information. She just transferred to MSU last fall semester. She is now concentrating on Interactive and Social Media. She hopes to pursue a career as a user experience designer after her graduation in Fall 2013.

Joe'L is a Media and Information student from Detroit, Michigan. She is a member of MSU Telecasters as Programming Director and an actor for The ShoW. Her future plans after graduation are to attend graduate school for film producing and pursue a career in film and television producing.

Aiman Farooq

Aiman Farooq is a senior majoring in Media & Information Technology and a student of the Media Sandbox curriculum. Aiman has had influential roles in Michigan State's student run radio station Impact 89FM, the CAS Media Sandbox, the North American ASUS CampusLife program, and an internship at Detroit/Windsor's 89X CIMX-FM among other responsibilities while still completing his degree in three years. His current career goal is to one day work with the creative minds at Google to make the world of information and technology a better place.

Zulhaj is a 4th year Media Information and Technology student with a specialization in IT and a passion for software development. Outside of being a web developer for the MSU College of Engineering, his passion for art and a mind set on business help fuel his own freelance photography company. Zulhaj hopes to be an example of success for all those underrepresented minority students in S.T.E.M fields.

Andrew Joseph

Andrew is studying Media and Information as well as Arabic. Although early in his career, he has already worked on multiple projects including a music video, several short movies, and various episodes for The Giraffe House. He plans to pursue a career as an editor or producer for a production house or advertising firm.

Michael plans to take a specialization in game design in the upcoming spring to move closer to his dream job of becoming a video game designer. Michael also has a strong passion for music and is currently an active musician as a member of the MSU Campus band. He also plans to try out for both the MSU Concert and Marching Bands in the upcoming school years.

Elliot Zirulnik

Elliot is a Media and Information junior planning on graduating in the spring of 2014. He is passionate about using media as an educational resource, having worked closely with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities to produce video and social media content, and this summer he will begin a marketing internship with African Safari Wildlife Park.
