This annual scholarship is awarded in honor of Baalu Girma, an Ethiopian who graduated in 1963 from Michigan State University with a master's degree in Political Science and Journalism. After graduation, Baalu returned to Ethiopia where he made significant contributions to the profession as a news correspondent, mentor and editor-in-chief of several of the nation's prominent newspapers. Baalu also possessed great talent for writing fiction and authored several famous novels. He was forward thinking and uncompromising in his writing or reporting. Baalu Girma was abducted in 1984 by the military government and disappeared by the military junta in 1984.
