Audio Production Camps
Michigan State University has an award winning audio production program with excellent recording facilities.
This summer, MSU is offering two high school summer camps in audio production. Students can partake in both the camps sequentially or just take one of the camps. The camps include:
Camp 1: Podcasting (July 14-18, 2008)
In this workshop, students will learn the basics of producing their own podcast – a way to let anyone broadcast their own show. Professional, relevant content is what makes some podcasts more popular than others, so students will learn some tips and tricks that the pros use.
Students should be ready for a week of writing, reporting, recording and editing.
Camp 2: Record a Rock Band (July 21-25, 2008)
There is more to recording music than just plugging in your USB microphone and hitting "record." Lost amongst the recent flux of self-produced music and millions of MySpace music pages are the theories and techniques utilized by professional recording engineers who are quickly becoming an endangered species. The camp will instruct the basics of recording, which includes but is certainly not limited to:
• How microphones workThe camp will begin with classroom instruction to culminate in recording a 3/4 piece rock band. Each student will have an opportunity at each step of the process, and will work together to mix the recording into a mastered piece for a presentation to be held for the students and their parents on the final day. This camp is going to be run by one of our own, master student, Brock Elsesser. Brock has recorded with big names such as The Verve Pipe and Hanson.
• The use of various styles of microphones and the applications in which each type is used
• Microphone placement for various instruments
• The use of a mixing console and its' various components
• Sound/music mixing theory
• Various effects, including Equalization, Reverb, Compression, etc.
