Michigan State students majoring in advertising, apparel and textile design, communication, marketing, retailing and supply chain management gathered on Friday, March 30 at the Marriott – University Place to hear speakers and to network at Kohl's Inspiration Day.
This year's Inspiration Day focus was to attract students from throughout campus who had a special interest in or curiosity about careers in the retail sector in a variety of career paths, not specific companies. Several Kohl's executives, along with a representative from Target, addressed specific careers in the industry.
In addition, Retailing graduate Cassandra Gut -- Chanel Consultant, Education and Business Development; formerly with Cartier and Gucci luxury brands -- spoke about her career path and gave career advice.
Inspiration Day also included the presentation of awards to two MSU faculty, Pat Huddleston, Ph.D., professor of retailing in the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing, and Linda Good, Ph.D., professor and associate chair in the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing for their work with Kohl's.
The awards were presented by Kohl's Vice President and Regional Manager, Loretta Sklar. Sklar, an alumna of MSU, graduated with a degree in merchandising management (now retailing) in 1998. Sklar was awarded the CAS Honorary Alumni Award in 2010 for her contributions to enriching the lives of MSU students and faculty.
Dr. Huddleston was honored for her work with Kohl's in her RET 481 Retail Strategy course. Students developed retail strategies for Kohl's and the top project(s) won a tidy financial reward.
"Pat is futuristic and has made a great contribution to networking with Kohl's department store,” Sklar said.
Dr. Good was honored for her work in conceiving of Kohl's Inspiration Day and successfully organizing this event for several years.
"Linda Good has embraced Kohl's. We want to honor Linda Good for her inspiration and leadership in the retail community,” Sklar said.
Congratulations to Dr. Huddleston and Dr. Good!
About Kohl's and Inspiration Day
Five years ago, Loretta Sklar, Kohl's Vice President & Regional Manager, approached the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing about developing some partnerships. One of the successful outcomes was the creation of Inspiration Day which was developed in 2008 by then-Chair Richard Cole.
On Kohl's Inspiration Day, teams comprised of 10-12 alumni working in the field of advertising, public relations and retailing, would visit classes to share advice and inspiration about the industry, job searching, interviewing, life lessons and career moves. Students loved hearing from the alumni and the alumni were excited to share with the students and network with each other.Share via these networks:
