Grandparents University

We're excited to welcome over 1,000 visitors to campus for Grandparents University next week. This unique camp enables MSU alum and their grandchildren between the ages of 8-12 to be MSU students together for two-and-a-half-days.  For many of the grandparents, it’s a trip down memory lane as they sleep in the dorms, eat in the cafeterias and attend classes.  And, for their grandchildren, it’s a good taste of what college will be like for aspiring Spartans.

First and foremost, attending a university is about learning.  Our faculty and staff will be teaching fun and interactive classes for our guest students to give them a good look at what the College of Communication Arts & Sciences is all about.

In our “Be on Live TV!” class, students will get hands-on experience at creating and broadcasting a LIVE television show. Lights, Camera, Action!

“It’s YOUR Newspaper!” class will allow students to write and design their own mini-newspaper, using their own stories and photos. They'll interview one another, write stories, take photos and then create a newspaper that they can take home with them.

The students will also be able to create their own commercial in “Let’s Create a TV/Video Commercial.”  Students will pick a name brand product with which they are familiar, then will go through the steps it takes to develop a contemporary TV advertisement. Students will rough sketch their ideas creating TV video frames and a TV Storyboard.

If you want to learn about “How Your Brain Works When You Talk,” there’s a class for that, too.  Students will learn how the brain works to support the uniquely human ability of communication, producing and understanding speech and language and how brain injuries can disturb function.

Our “Video Game Design” class will teach students about the design and development of digital games from the initial idea to a playable web-based game in this highly interactive class. Students will also be able to see and play some of the video games that CAS students and faculty have created.  Perhaps, there will even be a challenge match between the grandparents and grandchildren.

The class, “Card Talk: Winning Communication Games” will introduce the idea of Card Talk, or how we “package” our messages to be effective in conversation. Participants will learn to identify the Talk Cards they play most frequently, and how to be more effective in “winning” talk card games.

We’re also offering a class called “Online Connections” for those who want to learn the art of connecting via online services. We will explain how simple it is to stay connected by using the latest technology: FaceTime, Skype and webcams to stay in touch with family and friends, no matter how far.

The best part of it is, from creating newspapers to filming commercials, producing TV and radio shows, to building interactive video games or studying the brain and how people communicate, faculty and students in CAS do this every day! Feel free to stop by, meet our faculty and staff, tour our building and the studios and learn about all that Comm Arts has to offer. We are excited to welcome our Grandparents University Class of 2012!
