The latest book offered by MSU Press got its start thanks to the vision of Howard Bossen, Professor of Photography and Visual Communication in the School of Journalism, and John P. Beck, Associate Professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
"Detroit Resurgent" is a book of photographic portraits, interviews, essays and poetry.
The 190-page book, edited by Bossen and Beck, includes photographs by French photographer Gilles Perrin; interviews by Perrin's wife Nicole Ewenczyk; a poem by jessica Care moore; essays by Larry Gabriel, Bossen and Beck; and a foreword by MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon.
Bossen and Beck, both Adjunct Curators at the Michigan State University Museum, worked on the "Detroit Resurgent" exhibition that was first displayed at the MSU Museum Sept. 8, 2013-Jan. 12, 2014.
The exhibit was turned into a book, which goes on sale beginning in April. A book launch party, open to the public, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art, 52 E. Forest Ave. in Detroit.
The "Detroit Resurgent" exhibit was completed as a result of the MSU Museum's commission of Perrin, at the urging of Bossen and Beck, to make a series of portraits in Detroit over a three-week period and have Ewenczyk record interviews with each subject.
The result: 62 portraits of 64 people in photographs and their own words. That exhibit will appear at the Detroit Athletic Club in Detroit from April 2 through May 31. From there, the exhibit will move to the Michigan State University Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, where it will be displayed beginning in July through the end of 2014.
The "Detroit Resurgent" book will be available for purchase through the MSU Museum, the MSU Press website or bookstores.Share via these networks:
