Connecting African Rural Communities

africanSusan Wyche, Assistant Professor in the department of Media and Information(TISM) is researching the adaptation of mobile technology in the developing world, especially in Africa. Most Kenyans, and all of the participants in Wyche's study, use pre-paid "airtime" or "credit" plans, which can create a barrier for many rural users of mobile technology. Dr. Wyche spent the summer conducting fieldwork in western Kenya investigating how lack of money and electricty affected mobile phone use.
