Posted on: November 19, 2012

OurHealthTelecommunications alum and president of OurHealth Media Network, Lillian Preston has created the first weekly health and wellness television series aimed at urban communities, titled “OurHealth Urban”. The program, which premiered on November 13 on Detroit’s WTVS-Channel 56, was created to address the alarming rates of chronic disease, death and disability occurring in urban communities.

“So many of our city’s most vulnerable suffer and die prematurely from diseases and conditions that are preventable,” said Ms. Preston. “Our goal with “OurHealth Urban” is to address this issue by providing relevant, quality programming that informs, educates and empowers individuals to better manage their health.”

“OurHealth Urban” is produced in partnership with the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, Detroit Public Television, Pfizer, S3 Medical and Whole Foods to provide information that motivates positive health behaviors in an engaging format. The program is being hosted by the Assistant Dean of Community and Urban Health at Wayne State University School of Medicine and CEO of Health Centers Detroit Foundation Dr. Herbert Smitherman Jr.

“The number of people affected by diabetes and hypertension in Detroit is almost doubling each decade. Improving access to care, educating the public and our patients, and helping them better manage lifestyle choices are the most effective ways to address the broad disparities that exist within our city,” Dr. Smitherman said, “We need to invest in the tools and resources people need to get healthy and stay healthy. It’s really the only way to work toward effectively managing the chronic disease epidemic in this country and subsequently controlling rising costs of health care.”

The program is set to feature chronic disease education, interviews with leading health experts, personal stories, healthy eating and cooking segments, fitness tips and health trivia, among other topics and will air next on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m.

OurHealth Media Network is a leading producer of culturally relevant health education and wellness video as well as a resource for comprehensive health communication and media services.
