Outstanding Alumni Award
Stephen Schram is an established industry leader in electronic media management and marketing. He serves as Director of Broadcasting and General Manager for Michigan Public Media at the University of Michigan, overseeing Michigan Radio - WUOM, an NPR news station broadcasting on FM signals in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Flint. Michigan Radio is one of the most listened to public radio stations in the country.
With over 500,000 weekly listeners, Michigan Radio is also the state's largest public radio service.
Under Schram's direction, the station has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally with significant journalism awards for news reporting, documentary production, and special programs, including multiple Edward R. Murrow awards for excellence in journalism. Before joining Michigan Public Media in 2006, he served as Senior Vice President /General Manager of CBS Radio's WOMC 104.3 and WYCD 99.5 as well as Director of Sales for its six leading radio stations in Detroit. Prior to CBS, Schram was Senior Vice President for America Online/AOL, directing their Web Properties programming and content operations for brands such as Netscape.com and CompuServe.
Schram's extensive career experience in senior media management includes earlier roles as Market Executive & Vice President for Clear Channel Radio Detroit, providing leadership and general management for its successful seven-radio station cluster. Schram's multimedia background includes previous network affiliate commercial television experience as Director of Marketing for WJBK-TV Fox 2, Detroit.
In 1975, after receiving his bachelor degree from Michigan State University-College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Schram began his broadcast career as an on-air personality and announcer at WVIC-FM, East Lansing. In his 35+ years of media management assignments, Schram has held senior management positions in multiple business units, with responsibility for revenue generation, marketing, expense control and personnel negotiations. His knowledge of the electronic and digital media business includes in depth experience with research, programming, advertising, and client solutions.
Schram is a Past President and current Board Member of the Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters since 2006. He previously served as director of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters in 1999-2002 and 2003-2005. He currently serves as Director of the Radio Research Consortium, Board Director of Public Radio in Mid America and Director of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation. Mr. Schram's civic activities include membership in the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor.
He is a graduate of Leadership Detroit XI. Schram earned his B.A. degree in Television and Radio from Michigan State University. Steve and his wife, Laurie, live in Novi, Michigan. They have two adult sons, (both Spartans - with Spartan wives) who also make their home in the state.Share via these networks:
