Without a doubt, alumnus Larry Swyer (B.A. Advertising '80) loves giving back to the College of Communication Arts & Sciences. When he visited the college Oct. 30-Nov. 1, he spent countless hours talking to advertising classes and meeting with students, offering real-world advice and guidance on getting a job post-graduation.
"I love to come back and give back," Swyer said. "It's all about helping people become successful."
Swyer is the Managing Partner of Account Management of WPP Group's MediaCom in New York City and is responsible for $350 million in media spending for clients ranging from Canon Cameras, Shell, Coldwell Banker Real Estate and more. He's led teams on major brands such as Subway Restaurants, Volkswagen, Audi, Olive Garden and Staples. Additionally, Swyer manages a team of 45 individuals, including a few CAS alumni.
During his recent visit to CAS, Swyer spoke to three different sections of ADV 350: Media Planning; met with former MediaCom interns and MSU seniors Paige Thompson, Spencer Swaney and Hanna Porterfield; and held a career services talk with students interested in interning at MediaCom.
Swyer emphasized to students the importance of the perfect resume and persistence when it comes to job hunting.
"If you want the job, ask for the job," Swyer said. "Be forward. Say, 'I want the job and here's why I'd be good for the job.'"
Swyer's visit is the second time he's come back to campus to talk with students within the past year. Since his last visit to CAS in February 2013, three CAS students were hired as interns at MediaCom and three MSU alumni were hired full-time with the company.Share via these networks:
