North America President of BPN Liz Ross, a 1994 Advertising alumna, was back on campus last week to deliver this year's Edward Zabrusky Public Relations Lecture.
A veteran of the advertising industry for nearly 20 years, Ross joined BPN, a global, full-service media agency, in September 2012 where she leads operations for the IPG Mediabrands' worldwide media agency network.
"As a child, one of my most memorable experiences was visiting my godmother in Chicago. I had the opportunity to spend the day with one of her friends who worked in advertising. When I returned home, I told my Dad that when I grow up I was going to live on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and work in advertising," Ross said. "I'm almost there, having spent my entire adult life, including college, in the pursuit of a career in advertising, an industry I love to its core. Now that I once again live in Chicago, albeit not on Lake Shore Drive, I can say that I have reached my childhood goal."
Ross credits Michigan State for helping her achieve that goal.
"It (MSU) was the first place where I really ever had the opportunity to both think through ideas, present them, defend them and it was really powerful," Ross said. "Advertising is such an experienced-based industry, and Michigan State did an amazing job of helping you understand the practice, helping you understand the ways to approach it so that it felt very practical.
"I jumped into an internship when I graduated and was able to move very quickly through."
