Spartans & Social Media

Here be a speaker at a gathering. This week, CAS and MSU alumni joined together for stimulating Spartan conversation along with a thoughtful social media presentation by Dr. Constantinos Coursaris hosted by the advertising agency, Leo Burnett in Troy, Michigan.

Leo Burnett has been a long-standing partner of our college, from hosting events to underwriting various education and research efforts. One example of their support for CAS students comes from the establishment of the George Katsarelas Scholarship fund.  George graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s in advertising and was the executive creative director at Leo Burnett, receiving a CAS Outstanding Alumni Award for his work in the advertising industry and his continuous contributions to the college.  Skip Drayton, CAS alum and executive vice president of Leo Burnett, helped establish the scholarship after George's passing.  This year, the Three men pose for a shot.scholarship was given to a well deserving and talented student, Tamara Todor-Nits.

Not surprisingly, due to their focus in using social media to strengthen their clients' presence, Leo Burnett also funded a social media research project looking at how consumers engage with companies through social media. This research was led by Dr. Cousaris, assistant professor of Telecommunications, Information Studies and Media (TISM).  Dr. Cousaris’ presentation consisted of an overview of the research project focusing on the study of the motivations, experiences, outcomes and design implications associated with new media use and a set of practical recommendations for social media use by organizations.  We all enjoyed a wonderful evening full of insightful conversation and were grateful to be hosted by our generous and long-standing partner, Leo Burnett.

Several people look excitedly at a presentation. The next couple of weeks on campus are among our busiest as CAS students transition to final exams and projects and our seniors prepare for their big day on May 4th – graduation.

Go Green.
