  • Don Braunagel (BA '63 Journalism) passed away on June 3rd, 2011. A longtime theater critic and editor, Braunagel worked in Michigan several years before moving to San Diego in 1980, where he developed a following and a reputation as a respected writer in the arts community. He was an assistant entertainment editor at The Tribune in the 1980s, was a founding member of the San Diego Critics Circle, and wrote for the Los Angeles Times, Daily Variety, and San Diego Magazine.

  • Roger Kullenberg (BA '52 Journalism) passed away on April 30, 2011. Kullenberg had a 50-plus year career in journalism and co-authored two books about the history of Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce. He previously worked for the Kalamazoo Gazette. Kullenberg also served on many community boards and along with his wife, helped to organize the Kalamazoo chapter of Parents of Children With Cancer in Southwestern Michigan. 
  • Dr. Thomas Baldwin (Ph.D. '66 Communication) passed away April 25, 2011. He was a specialist in broadcast and telecommunications policy research and scholarship. Professor Baldwin was a faculty member at MSU for 38 years. He also chaired the committee that originated the Mass Media program in CAS and was director of the program for 18 years. Additionally, he was the acting chair of the Department of Telecommunication and was a senior fellow with the Quello Center. After retiring Dr. Baldwin remained active in the college, serving on the CAS Alumni Board from 2003 to 2010.

  • John Berry (BA '50 Journalism) passed away on March 18, 2011. Berry opened his own advertising company and a franchise of the gift and collectibles store, the Mole Hole, in the 1970s. Before retiring, he served as vice president of marketing for Steak 'n Shake in Indianapolis.

  • Ivan Preston (MA ’61 Communication, Ph.D. ’64 Communication) passed away March 1, 2011. Preston was a journalism professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison from 1968 to 1999.

  • Bruce “Bud” Moore (BA ‘55 Journalism) passed away on January 15, 2011. Bud started his newspaper career with the Lansing State Journal, then with the Pontiac Press and Grand Rapids Herald. He went on to be Promotion Manager of the Ann Arbor News, where he worked for 22 years. Bud was also a WWII U.S. Navy veteran.
  • Jerry Lee Morton (BA ‘65 Journalism) died January 24, 2011. Jerry was a former editorial-page editor and photojournalist for the Enquirer in the 1970s and previously taught journalism at MSU. He spent time in both Mexico and Romania, and his Jerry Lee Press published photo-essay books of people he met in both places. A decade ago, Jerry also published "The Sound of Words."
  • Arnold Bransdorfer (BA ‘49 Speech and Theater) passed away February 4, 2011. His career past involved both journalism and public relations, where he worked at many places such as the the Mount Clemens Monitor-Leader and the Lansing State Journal. Arnold was also an aide to Michigan Senate Republican majority leader Emil Lockwood from 1965 to 1972 and recently operated a photo lab until retiring in 1992. Arnold was inducted into the State News Hall of Fame in 2008 and was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran.
  • John Robert “Bob” Dawson (BA ‘42 Journalism) passed away January 1, 2011. In 1956 he opened the advertising firm of J. Robert Dawson and Associates and from 1965-1985, he served as the Director and then Vice President of Public Affairs at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. He also taught public relations courses at Cleary College and Wayne State University. Additionally, Bob was very active in his community, serving as the President or Chairman on numerous organization boards, and was a decorated World War II veteran.

  • Steve Repko (BA ’74 Journalism) passed away December 31, 2010.  Repko recently worked as a sports copy editor and baseball columnist for the Oakland Press. He was also a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) and former sports editor of the Ypsilanti Press. Repko had over 35 years of sports writing experience.
