Advisor organizes drive to help international community

Every year thousands of international students come to Michigan State University. One Spartan who is working to welcome them is Jennifer New, who for the past three years has helped make international students feel more at home through an event she coordinates.

New is the study abroad coordinator for the College of Communication Arts & Sciences, and also an advisor for communication majors. She is also the recent recipient of an MSU Globie Award for her coordination of the annual International Lending Center Drive.

This donation drive, which benefits the International Student Lending Center of the Community Volunteers for International Programs, collects new or used household items to be borrowed by MSU international students. This year marks the third drive. In her Spartan saga interview, New said, “the drive that I started brought in 10 vans full of donations to the lending center.” By being a part of this program, international students are given the chance to “save some money and it makes them have a sense of home and a sense of community.”

Zhong Sun, a Chinese visiting scholar, expressed her gratitude towards the Lending Center. “As soon as I stepped into the Lending Center, I got a big smile from the volunteers. They taught me how to borrow things with my student ID, when should I return them, and help me to locate them easily…I really appreciate this friendly and helpful organization,” she said.

This year's drive started in May and ends on Aug. 19. Any and all donations can be taken to 189 Communication Arts & Sciences, the Lending Center, 1434 F Spartan Village, or dropped off in the south lobby of the Communication Arts & Sciences Building. Although furniture and cleaning supplies are not accepted for this drive, used and new household items from sheets to kitchenware are needed. Cash donations and gift cards are also appreciated and go directly to the Lending Center.
