For the past several years, Advertising + Public Relations faculty have worked intensely with their students to ensure a strong showing at the Mid-Michigan American Advertising Awards. It is a major undertaking involving countless hours preparing entries, but every year our students set a new record.
Advertising + Public Relations department Assistant Professor Maral Minassian Zakharia coordinated this year's student ADDY entries, which is no small task. Last Thursday evening, Feb. 13, collectively 27 MSU students received Gold ADDYs, 36 were awarded Silver ADDYs and 27 received Merit awards, marking another record award-winning year.
The biggest student winners of the night were Henrik Blix and Leah Cranston who won Best of Show in the category of Out of Home Campaign for their Sartori Cheese and Two Lads Wine Ad Campaign. Additionally, Blix and Cranston won a Gold ADDY in the Elements of Advertising - Copywriting category for their Sartori and Two Lads campaign as well.
Blix, with creative partner Kelsey Sedlmeyer, also won the Judge's Choice for Television Campaign for their Oberon entry.
Judge Kevin Miller, the Creative Director/Partner for Signature Advertising & Digital Solutions in Memphis, Tenn., noted on the first page of the ADDY Awards program that Blix and Sedlmeyer's Oberon TV commercials "are proof that you don't need big budgets and New York creatives to make award-winning beer campaigns. You can be a college student with a big idea, a camera and a few Oberons. It doesn't hurt if you also have a knack for buzz-worthy copy and deadpanned punch lines."
Cranston also won two more Gold ADDYs in the Elements of Advertising category for Visual - Animation or Special Effects and the Collateral-Poster category for the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness Campaign. She partnered on this campaign with fellow students Libby Pederson, Jessica Morrow, Lynette Davidson and Cameron Elkins.
Advertising + Public Relations Assistant Professor Henry Brimmer also had a big night at the ADDY Awards. In recognition for his dedication to advancing student work and pointing out the importance of entering competitions, the Mid-Michigan Creative Alliance (MMCA) chose Brimmer to hand out this year's Student ADDY awards.
In addition to encouraging students to enter their work, every year Brimmer submits personal projects and work done in collaboration with Advertising + Public Relations Instructor Lawrence Steinberg. This year Brimmer won three Gold ADDYs, one on which he partnered with Steinberg and students Madeline Rosemurgy and Stephen York in the Advertising for the Arts & Sciences - Collateral category. Their entry was called "More Intense Than a Double Root Canal."
Brimmer won another Gold ADDY entry for his MICA Gallery entry submitted in collaboration with Advertising + Public Relations Department Chair Jef Richards. His third Gold ADDY was in the Direct Marketing category for his 2013 Land Cruiser Calendar entry.
Valeta Wensloff, Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media (TISM) department outreach specialist and internship coordinator, along with TISM Instructor Andrew Dennis, won a Silver ADDY in the Integrated Campaign category for their MSU Media Summer Camps entry.
